Meaning of Relationship
According to oxford dictionary, relationship is the way in which two or more people or things are connected, or the state of being connected.
Types of Relationship
We have different types of relationship; family relationships, friendships, acquaintanceship, and romantic relationships.
What we are discoursing here has to do with work relationship.
Foundation of Relationship
The foundation for any good relationship starts with a healthy relationship with God himself. You will never be able to relate with any man successfully except you have a good relationship, and we have done many series on how to relate with God.
The reason is God is the founder and creator of relationship on earth. God started relationship with Adam in the Garden of Eden. Earth. After God created man, he never left man alone The bible says God was always coming down to communicate with Adam in the garden of Eden.
The fundamental reason God created man was for relationship. God does not relate with angels as such. Angels are God’s servants, according to the bible, they are ministering spirits sent forth to minister to those who are the heirs of salvation. Angels are not God’s children, God will never call any angel his son.
They are just there like robotic servants, all they were created to respond to is the word of God. Wherever any angel hear the word of God with faith attached, the angel will respond to it with a faster speed than lightning speed. Therefor God does not relate with angels; they are only made to respond to the word of God; whether the words are coming from God or man.
Therefor angels are just instrument of God for the enforcement of the realization of scriptures in response to faith. Angels will act promptly, appear instantly whenever and where ever there is faith.
Therefor angels are not God’s children, they are God’s servants. God created man to relate with him.
Examples of God’s relationship with man in the Old Testament;
1. Adam and Eve
God was always coming down to relate with them in the Garden of Eden before the fall of man.
2. Abraham
And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. …
Even after the fall of man God could not but still find a route to relate with man through prophets. The bible called Abraham the friend of God.
3. Moses was another prophet that had a close relationship with God.
Exodus 3
Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt. …
4. Jacob
Genesis 32
And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God’s host: and he called the name of that place Mahanaim. And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom. …
5. David and all the prophets
All of them had a close relationship with God. To still make the relationship with man permanent as was planned, God had to fine means to restore man back to its perfect state for a perfect relationship with God as planned initially before the fall of man.
This is why God had to send the only thing he had which is his word tome in form of man called JESUS to die in place of man for the salvation of man. The salvation of man gave birth to another phase of the relationship between God and man.
Man now has to be born of God in the second birth. This is the climax of the relationship between God and man. Once you are born again, you become a child of God and grow from there by the knowledge of his word to become a son. A son of God is called god. Therefor God has now reproduce himself in men.
Man born of God can now address God as his father, therefor the relationship has grown to man becoming an integral part of God. Man therefor can belong to the family of God. When God is having family meeting, man will be present as a son.
This is the extent the relationship between God and man has grown.
We have shown you how God himself started relationship and how it has grown in many dispensations. There is no way you will be able to know how to relate than God himself who initiated relationship. We learn how to relate perfectly from the bible.
How To Relate With Your Boss
Love as foundation
The foundation of any relationship is love, whether the relationship is with your wife, children, cousins, friends, boss, and colleagues, even enemy. According to the bible, we should love even our enemy. The bible says we should be at peace with everyone as much as we can. Therefore whether it is your wicked boss or nice boss, the secret is to love him as well equally.
According to the bible if you are striving for mastery, meaning, it you want to excel in anything, you must be temperate all things you, be flexible, smile always, even when you are angry. You must not frown when angry. Why frown, the anger is in the heart, not in your face, it really has nothing to do with your face.
No need for abuse or quarrel. It takes a word or sentence to say no. if you do not like something, just say; do not do it again. You must not talk too much before someone is corrected. If someone does not want to take correction he will not take it whether you talk millions or turn your head upside down.
I have been trying to go general but you know your boss is your boss, he is your head, your senior, irrespective of your age. His yes is final, his no is final and that without any of your contribution. The placement of your boss should advise you enough to be careful and rather try your best to meet the standard set by him or her.
Try your best not to default too many times, refuse to be his opposition, you do not need to fight your boss. If your errors and excuses are too many, he will not like it. Never allow your boss to note you as an enemy. Remember, he or she is also striving to succeed as a boss just like you should strive to succeed as a worker there.
His success is your success just like your success is his success.
Every office has secret operational module
In most institution, no worker should know this because they are using to fish out lazy workers. They always have a way of selecting list of those that should be sacked in case there is any need to reduce the work force. They will never make mistake to sack those who are industrious and helping the company or institution to grow.
They will always fish out those who has little or no contribution to the success of the institution. You, as a worker will never know anything about such list till the day the institution wants to take action against such people. That might also affect your promotion or augmentation. Most at times your boss is the master minder of such list.
Therefor you should fear if you are in his bad record. Success of any institution is a joint contribution, everybody in that institution has a part to play, if they did not need your part to succeed, they will not employ you there, therefor make sure you play your part to fit your purpose there.
You should have a passion for whatever you do for a living and if you are not passionate about your job, please change it. Passion has 80% contribution to your success. Anything you do with a passion is bound to succeed because you love what you are doing.
If you love your job, you will sacrifice for it, you will put extra time, extra energy, you will always be the last person to leave the office, the first to resume, and it will always look like you have done nothing. You feel cheated because you do not love what you are doing.
If you do your job with a passion, you will never notice when you doing other peoples work, covering up for others and you will never complain. It pays, the people at the top may not notice it initially but they will definitely notice it eventually, and watch out, you will definitely be crowned for it today or tomorrow.
The disadvantage in living like this is that others who are not working with the same mindset will jealous you and you will always excel more than them. Look, your passion or good work may not be rewarded in that particular office. Your immediate manager may refuse to notice it, but it will surely speak for itself somewhere.
If you do your job, your boss will always know you are doing your job, even if he pretends. If he wants you to do something extra, may be out of your office, help out. Love to give a helping hand in your office, it is a seed, you too will definitely need it one day.
Your boss needs your support for him or her to succeed, he or she will always look out for this. Make sure to always cover him up, help him out. Be the first to let him know things that will work against him or the company, and never connive with people to bring your boss down.
It is always a nice idea to send a commendation text message to your boss, a thank you text, and most especially when he has brought a new innovation, done something exceptional, or done somethings that are of benefit to the staff.
It is not all your colleagues that will like your boss and they will be on the opposition, they have already put the man or woman in their bad book. It is like that to every leader, never join them. They will always want to win you over to their camp, do not cooperate.
This is the reason you must not announce to your colleagues that you have or you want to send a text message to your boss. It is not a must that they know how you relate with him, but be careful not to report others to your boss. People’s character, behavior, actions has a way of reporting themselves, no need to create enemies in an office.
And more so, some experienced, matured leaders are careful with those who report others, except in some special cases of stealing, rubbery. Even then, wisdom will tell you to do it in a way that nobody will know that you were the one who did the report, that’s why there is mobile phone. You may not even call but send a text message.
And if you are not sure, let your boss know that you are suspecting something, he will have a way of finding out by himself. At least your boss should have a way of discovering you are being loyal to him or her. It is such a great thing when you allow your boss to trust you.
People have gone to the extent of marrying their secretary, why? Because of trust and loyalty. If you are this loyal to him or her, then you are better off for a wife or husband.
A man was caught conniving with other staff to blackmail or run down the boss using Facebook. May be they did it thinking it will never be discovered. It is possible the boss was wicked, siphoning money, stealing from the institution, but you are mot the owner of that institution, it is not you that will judge him or her.
Even if your boss is like this; do not try to dent his or her image, do not report him or her. Bad of good boss, he is still your boss. Your boss is your boss, wicked or good, you must still be loyal.
It is not because he is wicked then you want to turn yourself to be his boss, you will be taking laws into your hands unnecessarily. The people who put him there should have known him better. You cannot show up to be wiser than his employers.
Your boss has his or her employers, they are the one to correct him or her, not you at all. You should also know that he will not be there forever, in case his presence is torturing you, bear it. It is for a while. Most times people work for a life time in an institution, but your boss may just be in that position for at most 4 years.
You May One Day Become a Boss
No institution likes to keep one person in a position for too long, except he or she is performing well and no one else to replace him yet. People grow in their office, people are being promoted to replace others. Your turn is also coming to be a boss one day.
And whatever seed you sowed to someone else is what you will reap when your turn comes, therefor you need to know how to relate with your boss and build a healthy relationship with your manager. Do to people what you would want others to do to you.
Pray For Your Boss
Prayer works, even the bible advises us to pray for our leaders. If prayer cannot change things, God will never tell you to pray for them. Praying for your boss has advantage, because it will make them favor you. You cannot work against your boss and expect him or her to favor you. There is a God factor in everything we do.
If you invite God to help things work out for you in anywhere, God answers such prayers if your obedient is complete. If you wish others well, people will also wish you well. If you pray that God should help your boss succeed, you are indirectly praying for your success.
The truth is if one person fail, many people have failed. Failure can never end in one person. If you are a teacher and you purposely failed one of your student, you have just failed yourself. It will pop up somewhere that you can’t teach or manage people.
And when you have tried your best and someone still fail, it will still pop up somewhere that you are the best teacher, you teach well but you cannot manage dull brains because there are teachers who picks up worst student and turn them to best student. Therefore in anyway it will still show that you must have lacked an ability.
It pays to go out of your way to help people, apart from the fact that they will remember you, future will also remember you in terms of reward.
Share Jesus With Your Boss
It is a nice thing to share Jesus with your boss if he or she is not born again. It will be a wonderful thing for you to be the one that turns your boss to Jesus. This is the greatest gift to someone; leading him to Christ, if he repents, he will forever remain grateful.
You see, never be afraid to share Jesus with your boss or anyone, big or small. This act is just like giving someone something more than gold, but in disguise. When you are talking to them, it will never look like you are giving them anything till they accept the package and open it, then they will appreciate how much you love them.
Anybody you got born again will eternally remain grateful to you. Apart from that, there is a great reward from God here on earth and after eternity. So you gain both ways, evangelism is the greatest investment any man can make while still alive.
What can make your boss always pleased or easily irritated with you?
To avoid any form of toxic relationship between you and your boss, you have to be positive always. You may be ignorant of how to relate with your boss but ignorant is not an excuse. You can’t tell your superior you did not know because you supposed to know, how did others know?
Always obey him or her. Sometimes in obeying your boss, you will end up not doing your job. It is better to obey your boss first, and obedient must be prompt. There are many things he knows about the company that you don’t have knowledge about.
Do your job, even if you do not go out of your way to help others, just make sure your job is always done. If what you are given to do is too much for, tell your boss, instead of just leaving some things undone, waiting to give him the excuse when he ask.
When the employment letter was tendered to you, your job was spelt out and if it is not, please ask because you cannot do everything. Whatever is spelt out to you as your job is what you are expected to do. Apart from being ignorant of how to relate with your boss, 90% of what will bring the feud between you and your boss is lack of doing your job. Therefore you must first of all complete your job before you can help others.
You cannot love others more than yourself, you can be sacked for not doing your job.
How to Detect Your Boss is Not Pleased With You
If someone is not happy with you, the first pot of call is to avoid you, communication will be less. If your boss call you and talk directly about what is the issue, this is much better for you because it is possible not much harm has been done. At this point your work on this is far less.
You can go ahead and tender all your apology right away but it still has to be done repeatedly. Secondly, if somebody is not happy with you it will show on his or her facial expression. He may not be smiling with you as before.
Thirdly, his actions towards you will proof that. He might call all other for meeting minus you, he might give out things to everybody else exempting you, he might even give you query directly.
What to Do if Your Boss is not Pleased With You
Simply find out what caused the feud, where did you go wrong. Everybody has what easily puts them off, may be you were not careful to find that out about your boss. In any case, after coming up with something from your findings, repent and sincerely apologize.
Follow up the apology to make sure it is accepted. Now, there are different ways to tender apology. Some has less or no impact at all, and some will always touch the heart to the bones. In any case, it is better to first put it into writing, then meet him one on one. Never try to give any excuse, use low tone throughout. Let him or her know you were at fault and you were wrong.
Do not wait one single day before you flinch your request for forgiveness and tender it repeatedly, let your boss be the one to be tired of the apology before you can stop. This is how your manager will know you have seriously repented. There is a way you tender apology to someone, except that person is a witch or wizard before he or she can reject such expression of regret.
How to Make Your Boss Love You
He that needs a friend must first show himself friendly. If you need love you must first give it. Garbage in, garbage out. What you sow is what you reap. If you do things that supposed to make someone happy, the person will be happy, and if you do otherwise, of course, you get otherwise too. No two ways.
There is no way your boss will not detect whether you love him or not. If I love you, I will pick interest in you, anybody can easily know how much you have him or her in your heart. It will reflect, even in your facial expression, your character and reactions will all display it.
Even when you act to pretend it will still show. For the fact that your boss pretend not to notice does not mean he doesn’t know. Matured people will always make that pretense.
You need to also note that whatever attitude you initiate, display or developed will grow. Hatred is a full grown irritation. It started by always being irritated by the person and developed to hatred. And by the time it is fully grown, everyone will know.
On the whole it is important to know how to relate with your boss in order to build a healthy relationship with your superior. Much more, to recognize that you are doing service to your manager who is a representative of the institution you are working for. If your serve him or her well, you are doing that to the company.
